ECM: Error Correction Mode is a Fax protocol implementing re-transmission of corrupted page data to ensure flawless fax transmissions. Should always be enabled.
With traditional non-VoIP telephony systems, some people argued that ECM should be turned off. The reason was that if a fax is sent or received on a constantly bad line, no page would ever be sent without data corruption. In such a situation, ECM would retry the page a few times and then give up. However, nowadays, this is an unlikely scenario. As opposed to that, loosing data due to network packet loss is a pretty likely scenario - and it is perfectly fixed by using ECM. |
