Gatekeeper

The H.323 term for a call server. It performs endpoint registration, address resolution, admission control, user authentication and more based on the RAS protocol. Although an optional component, innovaphone H.323 scenarios virtually always include one or more gatekeeper.

In innovaphone speak, the gatekeeper is a software component within the relay that allows both SIP and H.323 endpoints to register. This is used in

special scenarios only.

Gatekeeper Discovery

When an H.323 client tries to register at its gatekeeper and has no knowledge of the PBXs IP address, then it sends a discovery to the multicast address 224.0.1.41. A gatekeeper should respond to the discovery packet and thus identify itself to the client.

The discovery is sent as a multicast, so in theory, it could be routed across routing boundaries. In practice, discovery works in a single LAN segment.

Generic Functional Procedures

Additionally to the standard QSIG features, PBX manufacturer can use a special QSIG message called Generic Functional Procedures to implement proprietary functions over a QSIG trunk line. This special messages cannot be interworked into a VoIP signalling protocol (since they content is non-standard/proprietary), but must be tunneled between two ISDN interfaces. In innovaphone speach this procedure is called QSIG tunneling.
