S

:
Acronym for Subject Alternate Name.

The Subject Alternative Name (SAN) is an extension to the X.509 specification that allows users to specify additional host names for a single SSL certificate.

This can avoid using a ->wildcard certificate in many cases.
Keyword(s):
:
Acronym for Secondary Access Rights Identities. These are additional access rights identifiers which may optionally be used in a DECT system.
Keyword(s):
:
Acronym for Session Border Controller

A separate network device, usually deployed in the DMZ, that controls VoIP signalling and media streams which cross the boundaries of a controlled corporate network (e.g. for SIP trunks or remote access of mobile devices to the PBX).

A loose term for the universal search API used in the myApps client. See link_intern.png sdk.innovaphone.com: 14r2/web1/com.innovaphone.search/lib1_api_search.htm for details.

SIMPLE, the Session Initiation Protocol for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions, is an instant messaging (IM) and presence protocol suite based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) managed by the IETF. Like XMPP, and in contrast to the vast majority of IM and presence protocols used by software deployed today, SIMPLE is an open standard.

:
Acronym for Session Initiation Protocol. An IETF signaling protocol to establish multimedia sessions. Used for VoIP, but also for a growing number of related applications and services, e.g. video, instant messaging, presence and so forth. Although SIP is transport protocol agnostic by design, existing applications use either UDP or TCP (the latter sometimes referred to as TSIP).

SIP does not provide for security. See SIPS for an encrypted variant.

Keyword(s):
:
SIP trunking refers to a service offered by telephony carries (traditional local exchange carriers or ITSPs) to terminate VoIP calls to the PSTN. Such services eliminate the need for a physical trunk line (analogue or ISDN) as the customers voice calls are sent to the PSTN using a standard IP connection. This eliminates the need for a PSTN gateway function at the customer premises.

In some markets, SIP trunks offer a more competitive solution. Benefits might include
  • more competitive pricing
  • greater flexibility as users usually can subscribe line-by-line, as opposed to the granularity imposed by ISDN (increments of 2 for BRI or 30 for PRI)
  • changes in the subscription often can be done without re-wiring
The downside though is an often less mature solution. Users should carefully evaluate the presence of all required/desired features (e.g. emergency calls, DDI, supplementary features such as CCBS/CCNR).
:
Acronym for SIP Secure. An encrypted variation of SIP. Requires TCP as a transport layer (TSIP). Usually used together with SRTP for secure media streams. Requires TCP as a transport mechanism.
