overlapped dialling

This term refers to the ability to initiate a call by dialling the individual digits of the destination number while receiving immediate feedback after each digit (sometimes also called overlapped sending).

For example, in European PBX installations, user usually will go off hook and expect to hear a local dial tone. When dialling a 0, they expect to hear the central office's dial tone. This is possible as the PBX will process each digit individually and play the central offices dial tone right after the first 0 is dialled.

In contrast, a cellular phone would not dial anything before the destination number is complete.
